You Want What?

Our well laid plan for the morning was a quick breakfast at our hotel and then straight down to the Salamanca Markets......

So down we went to the restaurant where the dining room was separated into 2 sections by a walkway through to the gorgeous gardens.  One side of the dining room had tables that weren't set or had not been cleared away from previous diners.  The other side had a continental buffet set up and quite a few tables set for breakfast.  There was one couple already eating.

(This was part of the lovely garden)

So I've suitably set the scene......

We arrived and waited for the waiter to be seated.

The 12 year old waiter peered at us through his eyebrows and meekly muttered, "I'll be with you in a moment"

And we waited........ and waited (he wasn't really doing anything except trying his darndest to avoid having to speak to us)

Jenny picked up a menu and we decided that we just wanted a bit of toast because a big brekkie would ruin the Hobart Harbour fish and chip lunch we had planned.  So all we were after was toast..... just a measly bit of toast!

Finally, the 12 year old turned to face us when he realised that we weren't going away and instead of saying "Good morning", "How can I help you?", "Are you having some breakfast this morning?", "Are you staying in the hotel?" or any other morning greeting for a breakfast waiter to extend to a potential breakfast punter - he simply stared.

I asked (yes, alright, a little exasperated) "Can we have breakfast?"

"What do you want?" was the reply

"Well we just want some toast, I see here in your menu you can just have toast instead of the entire continental brekkie?"

He became even more uncomfortable, "Oh, um, um, oh, um, well, just stay on this side cause we're like just cleaning up on that side."

So, feeling overwhelmed with unwelcomeness I turned to Jenny and asked "Is this too hard?"  To which she replied "Yep!" and we spun on our heels.

His response: "Ok"

And thank goodness we didn't spoil our morning appetites because we were able to head straight for the hot dog tent at the markets.  So thank you 12 year old waiter - you've saved us precious future time from being wasted walking down to the dining room and, in hindsight, quite a bit of sit down brekkie money.
